The Shop is a traditional sweet shop, set up by the members of the Wren Spinney Community Special School, in order to provide young children from the ages of 11-19 who suffer from severe and profound learning difficulties, with opportunities they otherwise wouldn't be able to get. The Sweet Shop focuses on teaching these children vital life skills such as independence, organisation and responsibility, by entrusting them with a range of different jobs and tasks. Whether they are serving behind the counter or handling the finances, there are plenty of new experiences and skills that they can learn from.
The Shop was set up in November, 2010 and the construction, from start to finish, was completed purely by the young adults of the Wren Spinney school. From the very beginning, where they handled the painting and decorating as well as the woodwork and tiling, right through to the opening day, which took place on 7th November, 2010, where they were required to handle tasks such as collaboration with others and handling the finances. All of these skills gave them new experience and opportunities and their cooperation and determination allowed us to make excellent progress with the production, and together we produced a result better than we could ever have hoped for.
Over the last three years, we as a business have grown and developed hugely and we have been able to achieve so much together. We believe that setting up our business in the centre of Kettering has made people more aware of the struggles that these young people face, in terms of employment and enterprise, and has given the young students a better chance of further employment in the future. Also, we believe that it has given people a more positive outlook on the aims of The Shop, and what we wish to achieve.
